Hurricane Irma is coming. That’s all there is to it. In about 72 hours, life here in Florida will be changed forever. Just like we speak of “Before Andrew” and “After Andrew,” there will be a “Before Irma” and “After Irma.” The only certainty is the uncertainties. A bump to the left or a bump to the right will forever change the lives of those hit or spared by the storm. Yet, just like the storm is uncertain, life in uncertain. Just this morning I was having breakfast with some friends when they received a phone call that their friend died suddenly. They sat there, stunned. She was young and energetic and full of life! It was a compelling reminder that when God stops our hands of time, we are as powerless as we are in changing the path of Hurricane Irma. However, by God’s grace, we have been given the power to choose our eternal destiny by faith in His Son, Jesus.
As Christians, we have to make a choice if we really believe that what we say we believe is really real. IF God is really my refuge and my strength, then I have no need to fear. THOUGH the circumstances around me look inauspicious, such as the earth changing or the mountains slipping into the heart of the sea, or the waters roaring and foaming, and the mountains quaking at its swelling pride, the Lord’s desire is for me to cease striving (that’s the “getting worked up” part) and know (that’s the surrender part), that He is God. Again, I have a choice to make, as do you. Do we really believe that what we SAY we believe is really real? If so, we must live and rest in that reality, and remember that He is God. We have no need to fear.
